Chicken And Waffles

Chicken and waffles is a combination of food I never would have thought to put together, but once you try chicken and waffles, you will understand why this strange combination is so popular. The savory from the fried chicken and the sweet from the waffles and syrup are simply amazing when paired with each other.

To make chicken and waffles you’ll need some boneless, skinless chicken thighs. I like to use chicken thighs instead of chicken breast because the chicken thighs have more flavor and they don’t get dry like the breast meat.  You’ll also need vegetable oil for frying the chicken, salt, pepper, and flour. To  make the waffles you’ll need flour, butter, eggs, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and eggnog.

Ya’ll… I couldn’t comprehend why people would eat fried chicken with waffles together, so I tried making it today and my mind is BLOWN. Hell yeah!

Equipment

Ingredients

For The Chicken

  • 2 lbs boneless skinless chicken thighs
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 cups flour
  • vegetable oil enough to fry the chicken in

For The Waffles

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 pinch ground nutmeg
  • 1 pinch ground cinnamon
  • 2 cups eggnog
  • 2 large eggs separated
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter melted
  • cooking spray for waffle iron

Instructions

  • Make the chicken. In a bowl season the chicken with salt and pepper. Add the seasoned chicken to a paper bag (use what ever bag you have) with the flour. Shake to coat the chicken evenly. Fry the chicken until golden brown and crispy, about 6 minutes per side on medium high heat, then set aside.
  • Make the waffles. Combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a medium bowl. Whisk the eggnog, egg yolks, and butter in another bowl. Stir the wet ingredients into the dry until combined. The natter should not be too lumpy or too smooth.
  • Whisk the egg whites until almost stiff, and then fold them into the batter.
  • Heat a waffle iron. Spray the waffle iron with cooking spray. Pour some of the batter into the middle of the iron, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Close and cook until golden brown and cooked through, 3 to 4 minutes. Repeat with the remaining batter.
  • Top the waffles with fried chicken, butter, syrup, and whatever else you would like. Enjoy.
